The Blue Coast, from Tróia to Melides, survives today as the longest extension of truly wild coast in Portugal. It is 40km of beaches embroidered by dunes, lagoons and marshes, home to a unique biodiversity, rich but in decline. This treasure of our times is now gravely threatened.
Do you want to keep the dunes free?
Help in the crowdfunding campaign.
The constructions of several mega-enterprises is already happening, resulting in the destruction of dune habitats and water misuse. Resorts, golf courts, beach houses, pools, lawns, roads, beach bars.
They claim to be “eco” and luxury. But who doubts that destroying ecossistems is not a luxury we can keep endulging?
We cannot allow that the Plan of Urban Development of the Tróia Peninsula goes through, that the gold courts and beach condos keep advancing in the coastline;
Nor that more water is sucked out while drought gets worse;
Nor that yet another region is disenfranchised from its people, privatised for the tourism of the elites, destroying in few years what took Nature thousands of years to create;
And the least of all can we keep perpetuating the overlay of economic interests to ecological, environmental, social and cultural sustainability.
Because we owe Free Dunes to future generations – it’s high time to really preserve what is important – join the Dunas Livres Platform.
The Movement for Dunas Livres started in 2020, fruit of the initiative of a group of citizens to face the disproportionate expansion of holiday villages and golf courts in the Blue Coast (North coastal Alentejo) in coastal areas of high ecological and social value.
In parallel with the dissemination of information and sensibilisation of the public, we have been digging deep on the projects, unravelling cases of legal incoherence and corruption.
In 2022 we became the Dunas Livres Association and gathered 10 NGOs that recognised the seriousness of the problem, to birth the DUNAS LIVRES PLATFORM and elevate the voices for this cause.
